What's The Difference Between Photography Safaris & Regular Safaris?

Dreaming of taking your camera to the savannah and getting up close with wildlife? You should also be aware that not all safaris are created equally.

There are traditional safaris, which are what the majority of tourists go on, versus special photographic safaris, which are what we create. Our photo safaris are designed so that people can go home with epic wildlife images and once-in-a-lifetime memories.

What Is a Regular African Safari?

So, we mentioned that traditional African safaris aren’t maximised for photographers. A regular African safari is designed for you to view as much wildlife as possible in a short amount of time. These Africa safaris are typically fast paced, with about 6-8 people per car, not focusing specifically on photography.

What Is a Photography Safari?

An African photographic safari, on the other hand, is tailored for photographers to maximize photo opportunities. Some of the key differences are -

  • Small group sizes; we limit the number of people in each car for maximum mobility.

  • Local expert photography host who not only has experience with photographing wildlife, but also knows the best tips and tricks for getting the top shots in the field.

  • Morning game drives from 6am to 10am and evening game drives from 3pm to 6pm are when we prefer to be out in the fields for the best lighting.

  • Time and patience, we don’t aim to see as much wildlife as possible, we aim to photograph wildlife in the best composition possible, and sometimes that can mean waiting at sightings for the best shot.

Who Should Book a Photography Safari In Africa?

A photography safari is best for any level of photographer, whether you're aspiring or experienced. The main focus of a photography safari in Africa is to capture the best images rather than just view the wildlife.

It’s the ideal choice if you're looking for a slower-paced safari with a chance to learn more about wildlife photography in intimate groups. You can also book private safaris with us at The Photographers Safari.

Why Take a Photo African Safari In Tanzania

One of the main destinations and our first East African country we have been offering photo safaris in is Tanzania. So, why take a photo of an African safari in Tanzania?

  • Landscapes are diverse, from Ngorongoro to Serengeti or the forested trees of Manyara, perfect for bird spotting.

  • Home to migration, big cats, the big five, and more.

  • Seasonal shooting offers so much, from the greens during the rainy season and the dry season, which offers easy sightings. There is also the calving season in February and Migration viewing throughout the year.
